Edmund Lewis
1600 - 1650 (50 years)-
Name Edmund Lewis Born 1600 Wales - There is no evidence to prove that Edmund/Edmond came from Wales. So, his birthplace listed here may be erroneous and it may, in fact, have been England. In addition, there is no concrete evidence that the father listed here was, in fact, Edmund's father. I have left the information here only so it has a resting place in case there comes a time when its veracity can be confirmed.

"EDMUND LEWIS - was one of the early proprietors of Watertown, and was admitted a freeman, 25 May, 1636. On the 14th of October, 1638, he was one of-the committee appointed to lay
out the lands in that town. He came to Lynn in 1639, and was
the first settler in Lewis street. He died in January, 1651.
The name of his wife was Mary, and his children were John,
Thomas, James and Nathaniel. His descendants remain.
George Lewis came from East Greenwich, in the county of
Kent, England. He was at Plymouth, in 1633. He removed
to Scituate, and afterward to Barnstable. He married Sarah
Jenkins, in England, and had nine children, of whom Joseph
and John were killed by the Indians, in the war of 1675. Dr.
Winslow Lewis, of Boston, descended from this family." - From Searching for Edmond Lewis of Lynn 2007:
"There is no evidence that Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts was the son of George Lewis and Catherine Matthew of Llystalybont, Glamorgan, Wales. This claim was made in the book Lewis Families of Wales and America by Edward Simmons Lewis in 1928. The author did not present any evidence to document that the Edmund Lewis of Wales was the same as the Edmond Lewes who boarded the ship Elizabeth in Ipswich, Suffolk, England and sailed to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634."
"There are many Lewes and Lewis families in and around Ipswich, Suffolk, England in the early 17th Century, so there is no reason to look to Wales for Edmond Lewes' origin."
"There is no evidence that Edmond Lewes married Mary Carew. This is an undocumented entry in FamilySearch.org. In fact, we do not know the surname of Edmond Lewes's wife."
"Edmond and Mary's oldest son John did not marry Mary Button. That was John Lewis of Westerly, Rhode Island. Edmond's son John married Hannah Marshall, Elizabeth Walker and Sarah Merriam and lived in Lynn, Massachusetts until his death in 1710."
